La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, Los Angeles

At the only active Ice Age excavation site in the world, La Brea Tar Pits and Museum, you can see ancient fossils that have been discovered below the museum itself, right in the heart of Los Angeles. Plants and animals, like dire wolves, mammoths, and saber-tooth cats, are on display. You can also witness paleontologists at work in the Fossil Lab. While the height of excavation at Rancho La Brea occurred in the early 20th century, scientists are still uncovering more fossils at this site, and the museum continues to grow and educate the public on its discoveries and methods. A visit to La Brea Tar Pits and Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Los Angeles route planner to plot your vacation.

  • A good place to go with family, in couple or alone, the park is large and is surrounded by several museums, the Museum of La Brea is not very big but is full of information, ideal to spend a couple of hours, has an impressive collection of fossils as a mammoth , Sabre teeth, sloths, lions, etc. There are some presentations in the audiovisual rooms with extra cost to the entrance ticket, it is very interesting to see the scientists working inside the laboratory vizual. I recommend wearing clothes and shoes. Tip. Check your website for the cost of tickets to the museum as they usually have discounts they do not have at the box office. The park has no entrance fee.

  • On our last visit we saw the traveling exhibit Mammoths and Mastodons! It’s a small but really nice museum with a large number of prehistoric mammal and bird fossils! The grounds are nice too and you ...  more »

  • I'd heard about this place all my life and finally got the chance to visit. Incredible! It's a beautiful park in its own right, but then you also have these fascinating tar pits. The largest is the size of a small lake (it's called the Lake Pit), and the smallest are only a few feet across, yet they all managed to trap many prehistoric animals. There's a museum next to the park that has exhibits about the pits and the fossils that have been pulled out. The park is free to visit, but there's an admission fee to enter the museum.
  • Loved this place after hearing about it all my life. There is tar randomly bubbling up out of the ground, so watch where you step. Lots of interactive displays and exhibits that kids can play with inside the museum. Getting to take a look at active dig sites is pretty exciting, too. The grounds are clean and well kept, and there is plenty space outdoors for little ones to run around. Great way to spend an afternoon. If you've got a kid that loves dinosaurs, this is a must.
