Trip Planner: USA / Florida / Brevard County / Merritt Island / Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge
At Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, observe the habitats of more than 500 species of land and marine animals living in this protected region along the Atlantic Ocean. This refuge is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and 21 endangered animals. Watch for alligators, manatees, bald eagles, and the Florida panther. Hike, drive, or boat through accessible areas of the park, and be sure to stop by the observation deck for a wider view of your surroundings. The southern part of the refuge is shared with the Kennedy Space Center, which was built in the 1960s. Despite this overlap, much of the 56,656 hectare (140,000 acre) refuge is available for your exploration. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge reviews
Spent a day on Merritt Island, very quiet, lots of wild areas with gravel roads here and there and some boat launch areas. Did a kayak tour so didn't have time to drive and see all of the island and..... more »
A wonderful, accessible option for bird watching. It has a great driving loop with pull off areas that you can sit to watch birds. I think this is a great option for anyone who is not able to... more »
Unfortunately the visitor center was closed when we came so make sure to double check their hours. There was a short boardwalk where we were able to view the freshwater lakes. We saw a turtle and birds but there wasn’t too much else. The beach was not too far away down the same road in which we were able to use our national park pass for. The beach was not very crowded but there were people fishing and walking their dogs. Not sure if there was much else to do at the preserve but we did take some pictures!
Amazing place. Lots of trails. The Canaveral National Seashore is my favorite beach in Florida because it's never crowded and it's right next to the launch pads. The entry fee is very steep unless you have an annual pass or go on one of their free days. But it's definitely a must stop if you are going to the wildlife refuge anyway.
