Valley of Fire State Park, Overton

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Overton
Red sandstone rock formations more than 150 million years old lend the name to Valley of Fire State Park. Established in 1935, Nevada's oldest park spans nearly 17,000 hectares (42,000 acres) and includes ample hiking and camping opportunities. You’ll have the chance to explore different geological formations, such as limestone and shale. Because the sandstone is so soft, you’ll see petroglyphs (rock art carved into the sandstone), dating as far back as 300 BCE created by the ancient Anasazi Pueblo people. The visitor center details the geologic and archaeological roots of the region. If you keep a sharp eye out, you may even spot the rare desert tortoise. • What a change of scenery!!! One hour from Las Vegas and the show is total. It's just beautiful. We don't know where to put our eyes. Empty your memory card well because you may take hundreds of photos. Here we are very small and we take a step back. Think of the water bottle.

  • Valley of Fire is truly amazing! Really cool place to hike around and enjoy nature. The colors here are mind bogglingly beautiful. The price of admission is very reasonable too. Would be a great place to camp but there's also quite a bit of free sites in the surrounding area. Be sure to check out the petroglyphs when visiting here, they are amazing!!
  • The park is very pretty with its red rocks and red sand. There are a good amount of places to hike but most are on the smaller scale with most hikes being less than a mile. I spent 2 days there with friends and it was enjoyable for it being all of our first times there. The entrance fee is $10 which seems to be standard among most state parks. I had fun climbing up some rocks and taking in the view which was just beautiful. All in all I'd make the trip again if it was convenient (maybe from Vegas) but I wouldn't make this the main place to see on a long trip.
