See and visit historical sailing ships, steamboats and submarines at Maritime Museum of San Diego, and even sail on some of them. Established in 1948, this open-air museum hosts one of the largest collections of historical sea vessels in the United States. Take a self-guided tour through the ships and mind your head--it can be quite cramped inside. See the oldest ship in the world still able to sail--the 1863 Star of India, which used to sail the seas for up to a year at a time--and a 1,814 metric ton (2,000 ton) diesel-electric Soviet submarine, among others. Visit the archives and exhibits to learn more about that mystical connection that people and sea have always shared. Such a wonderful museum. I've lived here for many years, love maritime history, and yet only recently visited the museum for the first time. Don't make my mistake, don't wait, go now! It's fantastic. The exhibits are thoughtfully laid-out and informative. The ship models on the ferry are exquisitely detailed. They're huge too, and give a great sense of how imposing they would've been in real life. If I were an eccentric Billionaire I'd buy them all then add a new wing to my estate where I'd keep them on display. It's also interesting having two subs on site, one Soviet and one American. It allows you to compare and contrast their designs and layouts. They were from slightly different eras, with different missions, but the differences are interesting nonetheless. The Star of India is the star of the show, and more interesting that I'd expected. I didn't realize you could go below deck, it felt very cool standing down there and looking back up. The docents on site are passionate about the vessels, extremely knowledgeable, and very happy to answer any questions you have. Their experience is a treasure, and well worth the price of admission. Speaking of price it's just $18 for an adult, and you can come and go all day. Readmission is allowed.
Even if you don't like "museums" this is a cool place. You get to tour tall ships, see a lot of historical boats, and walk through submarines. It's amazing. Plan at least a few hours if you can, to really enjoy it. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. There are guides to answer questions. Not sure if they do organized tours or not. You're free to walk around at your own pace, that's what we did.
