Affectionately known as the “jewel box” of fine art, the Timken is home to the Putnam Foundation’s world-class collection of European and American masterpieces and Russian icons. Artists represented include Rembrandt, Rubens, Fragonard, Bierstadt, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, John Singleton Copley, and Eastman Johnson.

Designed by San Diego architect John Mock for Frank L. Hope and Associates, the museum building is considered one of the most important examples of mid-century southern California modernism, and one of the finest regional examples of the International Style in the United States.

  • This petite museum was pretty wonderful, with spacious galleries to view lovely selection of French, American, and Italian paintings, and Russian Iconastry from 16th and 17th century. It was so great ...  more »
  • Good for a couple of hours. Well presented collection, good for locals but not something that you would travel to see. If you are spending a day at balboa park, this is a nice indoor cultural stop.  more »

  • The Timken Museum is the perfect size and price for a fine art museum! It boasts it's own Rembrandt, Corot and Inness along with other excellent works. It has still life's, landscapes, portraits and pictorial paintings that tell a story so is well-suited for young people just learning about the arts as well as more mature tastes. BUT it isn't very large and it's free! That's right free every day and open all the time. It also has small visiting shows periodically so you never know what you might see. That's why it is sometimes called 'the jewel of Balboa Park'.
  • Free museum of art. Take all of your art loving out of town guests, only so much they can see (major room on right and left) and so your art experience is capped to about an hour tops. John from Guest Experience is the best!
