Explore the neighborhood known for its history of hippie culture that now hosts a variety of hip cafes, clothing boutiques, independent bookstores, and more. Also called the Haight or the Upper Haight, Haight-Ashbury is the perfect place to get a feel for the 1960s subculture that once defined the city. The neighborhood grew in popularity when North Beach became too expensive for bohemians, and was home to the likes of the Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and other rock legends. You can still pick up plenty of tie-dye and incense, and no visit to the neighborhood would be complete without wandering the aisles of a record shop. Stroll the streets, taking in the counterculture that is still visible, admire the murals and Victorian houses, pop into a coffee shop to people-watch, or catch some live music.
