Palacio da Liberdade, Belo Horizonte

On weekends and public holidays, Palacio da Liberdade opens its doors to the public with a permanent exhibition entitled "Palace of Liberty - Memories and Stories." Opened in 1897, the palace was for many years the seat of government in Belo Horizonte, and has been the scene of many decisions that have shaped the nation. Equally as fascinating as the building's political history are the eclectic architecture and decor. The exterior of the building combines numerous European styles, of which the neo-classical elements are predominant, whilst the decor ranges from Louis XV, to Moorish, to Art Nouveau. On the tour you pass through 30 sumptuous rooms filled with crystal chandeliers, gilded bronze, parquet floors and rich furniture.
