Catedral Basilica Menor Nossa Senhora da Gloria
Catedral Basilica Menor Nossa Senhora da Gloria is one of the most striking examples of religious architecture you will see, not only in Brazil, but the world. Built between 1959 and 1972, the first stone laid down was made from marble taken from St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. This detail is the only real nod to the past as the overriding feel of the design is noticeably modern. Right in the heart of the city of Maringá, this Sputnik-inspired cathedral is the tallest in South America, with its bold conical shape reaching a height of 124 m (407 ft). Between the inner and outer cones of the structure, there is a 598-step staircase spanning 18 tiers. Though it requires quite an effort to climb, you will be duly rewarded upon reaching the observation deck on the 14th tier, where you can experience a breathtaking 360-degree view of the city. There are valuable religious artworks, including sculptures, both inside and outside, and the beautiful garden is much loved by locals. When night falls, Catedral Basilica Menor Nossa Senhora da Gloria is awash with beautiful colored lights, giving it an even more spiritual feel.
