Get away from tourists and enjoy old-style colonial Brazil at Parque Lage, a public park at the foot of the Corcovado Mountain. Spanning 52 hectares (128.4 acres), the park was designed in 1840 by an English landscaper. Take one of the many walking trails in the subtropical forest with imperial palm trees, and enjoy spotting monkeys and toucans resting in the treetops. A stately colonial-style building with a tranquil courtyard pool dominates the park: once an old sugar mill, the structure now houses an art school. Visit caves, little ponds, and an artificial island, and have a picnic in the quiet, exotic setting. Check out the art or a music performance, or savor a coffee and snack inside the mansion. It is a free and gorgeous park to visit in Rio. There is a huge garden with a fountain outside of the beautiful antique mansion where is located the school of art. The patio is free for visiting and the coffee shop there serves an amazing traditional Brazilian breakfast. The patio is just the perfect spot to take a photo as you can frame the pool and the Christ the Redeemer statue in the same photo.

What a wonderful experience! I wasn’t expecting the terrain to be so rugged, but crawling through rock formations and climbing stairs & trails transported me back to the colonial era. And the cafe at the center is a treat! It was a pool at one point and the food choices at the cafe was delicious and special!
