Built by the Venetians as a means of defending the city, Fortress Palamidi presides over Nafplio from above. The Venetians built the fortress between 1711 and 1714, during their second occupation of the area. The fortress proved unsuccessful at protecting against invasion, however, and was taken over by the Turks in 1715 and then the Greeks in 1822. You can climb more than 900 steps from the town to the top of the fortress. At 216 m (709 ft) above town, the view of Nafplio and the gulf is your reward. Use the brochure provided at the entrance as your map for a self-guided tour. Absolutely fabulous! So cool to climb and descend the 999 steps. We could have spent an entire day exploring: the Chapel, the cisterns, the rooms, the outposts and the views, etc. Loved the lion carving for John Mark. Definitely worth the trip!

Very cool, great views and not so many people. The 986 steps up and down take longer than the walk around at the top and make your legs remember it for a couple of days after. Very interesting when you get up to it and discover the car park at the back. Check opening times and go early in the day.
