Kilmainham Gaol Museum
Kilmainham Gaol Museum turns the clock back a few decades, offering you a look inside one of history's most notorious prisons. The imposing gray building played a key role in Irish history for over a century, finally closing its doors in 1924. Before then it provided a grim setting for the imprisonment of notable participants in the many uprisings for Irish independence, culminating in the execution of 14 men who led a rebellion that took place during Easter week in 1916. You can take a guided walk through the history of this eerie site, now one of Europe's largest unoccupied structures of its kind. Before you leave, look in on the yard where the infamous 1916 executions took place. To plan Dublin vacation without wasting time, ask Inspirock to design an itinerary.

Did the tour on 17th of May with our tour guide Karl who did a great job! He knows a lot about the history of the prison and makes a good time of it with his jokes. The tour takes about 55 minutes...

This was a brilliant place to visit. Being a distance from the city centre, it would be easy to wonder if it's worth going; it most certainly is! We loved every minute of our visit and our guide (Ben) was so knowledgeable and passionate it was impossible not to be drawn in. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Highly recommend if you enjoy history. Book ahead as they tend to sell out the tours. Our guide was excellent and passionate about the information he shared. The prison has a fascinating place in Ireland’s history. There were younger children (under 10) on the tour and I think it was too long and a lot of information for them. I wouldn’t recommend children unless they have a passion for history.
