Enrich your tour of the city with a history lesson at Museo Nacional de Antropologia, one of Mexico's premier cultural institutions. Established in 1964, this comprehensive museum contains important artifacts from the country's pre-Columbian past. Major highlights include an Aztec stone calendar and a 16th-century statue of Xochipilli, Aztec god of art, games, flowers, and song. After you piece together Mexico's pre-Hispanic past, visit the upper display halls to learn how the country's indigenous cultures live today. Rent an audio guide at the entrance if you wish to explore on your own, or join one of the museum's free guided tours. A most amazing museum, both architecturally and culturally. I highly recommend a tour guide for first time visitors, as the exhibitions often need some interpretation and occasionally lack English...

Amazing to get in touch with the rich cultural heritage. Is a necessary stop once in Mexico City. Spend one hour and a half just conecting with cultural and history.

One of the best and most important museums anywhere in the world. Building is wonderful, a courtyard inside and outside lots of nice gardens that feature reconstructions of buildings of the corresponding cultures displayed in the adjacent hall. The collection of the museum is vast, the two most important rooms if you only have an hour are the Teotihuacan hall and the central Aztec or Mexica hall. You should not miss those even if you are just for a short time here and can't spend half a day in the museum. With that said the other halls are astounding as well, especially the Maya, Oaxaca, Toltec and Olmec civilizations. If possible you should visit all the halls on the ground floor. Upstairs you find exhibits of the various cultures in Mexico today. Worth seeing if you still have the energy but the ground floor is much more important so if you have to skip something skip the upstairs exhibits. We arrived around 9am mid week and the whole place was completely empty we had the main halls to ourselves for a while. crowds started coming around 11-12. And yes the museum does open at 9am not at 10 as stated in some places. Masks are mandatory and they also do temperature checks. Almost everyone is adhering to the mask rules even outdoors.
Extremely impressive. A lot of effort and meticulous attention to detail throughout. I liked the scenes of early man struggling with nature in the first 2-3 sections. Don't miss the outdoor areas (at the back of each main room) which were also very interesting and well put together. It was a great way to spend 3-4 hours. I was less interested in the ethnographic content upstairs, but you could see that that too was done with a lot of careful effort.
