Find an important local museum, housed in the former monastery buildings of a large church, at Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca. With rooms dedicated to pre-Hispanic times, the colonial era, the independence era, the present, and the old baroque church itself, the museum covers a broad range of cultures. Detailing the history, traditions, and ways of life of different cultures throughout history, the museum explores the similarities and differences between different social groups, whether they lived concurrently or were divided by centuries. Don't miss the chance to see the contents of an ancient Mixtec tomb, including the jewels, gold, and precious stones that were buried with a king and his sacrificed servants. The museum is currently closed (I uploaded a photo showing the information in Spanish). I talked to a director (I speak Spanish) and she told me the the museum may reopen in a couple of weeks.

Closed as of Christmas 2021. Once again the INAH has closed an important cultural site due to nonsensical covid rules. How come every other non INAH museum in the country is able to figure out how to stay open while abiding by sensible pandemic regulations? The board of the INAH should be embarrassed at their lack of dedication to this important culture.
Like many museums in Oaxaca the information on google is not correct. Most museums are closed due to "execive pandemic fear" or desire to work less or even perhaps to make less money, whatever the reason it detracts from the experience to visit Oaxaca. Yesterday the streets were filled during carnaval celebrations there was no "pandemic fear" for that yet for venues with less afluence of visitors they are kept closed. It is a shame, hope they change this soon!!!
