Ouro Preto — 1 night

Designated a World Heritage Site because of its well-preserved Baroque architecture, the city of Ouro Preto served as the state capital until local governance outgrew the scale of this pleasant valley settlement.
Kick off your visit on the 3rd (Sat): steep yourself in history at Mina Du Veloso, then identify plant and animal life at Parque Estadual do Itacolomi, then discover the riches below the earth's surface at Minas do Palacio Velho, and finally make a trip to Praca Tiradentes. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: hike along Estrada Real.
