Create an itinerary including Holy Trinity Church
Despite its unimposing exterior appearance, Holy Trinity Church boasts a rich history dating back to the 11th century. Benedictine monks from Normandy established a priory on this spot in 1089, replacing with their own structure an older Saxon church. The current building dates mostly from the 15th century and stands in a secluded churchyard near one of York's busy shopping streets. To reach the atmospheric old church, pass through an 18th-century archway that once housed local artisans' workshops. Once inside, take a close look at the eastern windows, which feature exquisite stained-glass from the 1470s. • Holy Trinity is a fascinating Church with Yorkshire stone paved floors and high sided pews designed to minimise any distractions as parishioners listen to the service. Definitely worth a quick visit.

  • Tried to stop by during posted open hours and the front gate was locked. We waited 15 min just in case someone was on break. But no luck. Left disappointed.

  • Visited to see the Anne Lister plaque and take a look at the boxed pews. They had a lovely local artist in there selling some of their work, my partner bought a carved wooden gargoyle. Such a welcoming place and beautiful inside too. A nice garden area surrounding the church too.
  • Well worth a visit. A little time capsule! It helps that the ladies inside were so lovely and welcoming! They answered any questions and offered lots of history about the church itself. Its hidden in the middle of a street so it's very easy to miss.
